The last graduate paperback6/29/2023 I'm going to get myself and my friends out of this hideous place for good-even if it's the last thing I do. But I'm not giving in-not to the mals, not to fate, and especially not to the Scholomance. That would certainly let me sail straight out of here. Unless, of course, I finally accept my foretold destiny of dark sorcery and destruction. And even if I somehow make it through the endless waves of maleficaria that it keeps throwing at me in between grueling homework assignments, I haven't any idea how my allies and I are going to make it through the graduation hall alive. Our beloved school does its best to devour all its students-but now that I've reached my senior year and have actually won myself a handful of allies, it's suddenly developed a very particular craving for me. I suppose you could even argue that it's true-only the wisdom is hard to come by, so the shelter's rather scant. That's the official motto of the Scholomance. "The climactic graduation-day battle will bring cheers, tears, and gasps as the second of the Scholomance trilogy closes with a breathtaking cliff-hanger."- Booklist (starred review) HUGO AWARD FINALIST - LOCUS AWARD FINALIST - ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: Polygon, Thrillist, She Reads NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - The specter of graduation looms large as Naomi Novik's groundbreaking, New York Times bestselling trilogy continues in the stunning sequel to A Deadly Education.

Cupid's Cupcake by Ivy Sinclair6/29/2023 Cupids are a frequent motif of both Roman art and later Western art of the classical tradition. In art, Cupid often appears in multiples as the Amores / ə ˈ m ɔː r iː z/ (in the later terminology of art history, Italian amorini), the equivalent of the Greek Erotes. Although other extended stories are not told about him, his tradition is rich in poetic themes and visual scenarios, such as "Love conquers all" and the retaliatory punishment or torture of Cupid. He is a main character only in the tale of Cupid and Psyche, when wounded by his own weapons, he experiences the ordeal of love. In myths, Cupid is a minor character who serves mostly to set the plot in motion. During this time, his iconography acquired the bow and arrow that represent his source of power: a person, or even a deity, who is shot by Cupid's arrow is filled with uncontrollable desire. Īlthough Eros is generally portrayed as a slender winged youth in Classical Greek art, during the Hellenistic period, he was increasingly portrayed as a chubby boy. He is also known as Amor / ˈ æ m ər/ (Latin: Amor, "love"). He is often portrayed as the son of the love goddess Venus and the god of war Mars. In classical mythology, Cupid / ˈ k j uː p ɪ d/ ( Latin: Cupīdō, meaning "passionate desire") is the god of desire, erotic love, attraction and affection.

The bad feminist6/29/2023 The main conclusion of this thesis would be that representation matters, specifically for those minorities that have been pushed aside or made invisible for so long. Gay, as an author and a Black woman, clearly perceives a lack of representation in the media: she feels neglected. This situation is aggravated when it comes to race or sexual orientation. In particular, if I had to highlight one of the main ideas of her work, it would be that Black women feel abandoned by society and the media due to the poor representation of those who do not belong to established beauty standards. Especially Gay's thoughts on gender, sexuality and race in the eyes of mass media and culture will be discussed regarding different social issues in the US. My aim for this dissertation is to analyze how Roxane Gay bears the difficulties of being a feminist today by means of humor in her work Bad Feminist. If you have not read it yet I recommend you to enjoy it so you get a historical background on Black feminism and humor in the States. The first part is titled “African-American Feminism Meets Humor” and includes a theoretical background of Black feminist humor. This article is the second part of a research which is divided into two parts.

Mark twain's the prince and the6/29/2023 Henry sought a son to secure a male heir to the Tudor dynasty, and when his first two wives gave birth only to daughters, he went to great lengths to marry again. Edward’s father, Henry VIII, is perhaps most notorious for his six wives. Twain’s details about the royal family were meticulously researched, but additional background may be required to enhance student understanding. King Henry VIII, Prince Edward (later King Edward VI), and most of the other nobles were real historical figures. Though The Prince and the Pauper is a work of fiction, it relies on real historical details about the English monarchy for its setting and characters. Given the opportunity, would you like to trade places with someone for one day?.How do stereotypes about different socioeconomic classes affect the way people treat each other?.How is justice achieved throughout the story?.How do the protagonists’ different upbringings shape their characters?.What was the role of the king in sixteenth century England?.Essential Questions for The Prince and the Pauper

The premise alone of this novel is enough to bring a smile to our lips. Christopher Brookmyre’s anarchic and zany Tartan Noir thrillers do just that and “One Fine Day in the Middle of the Night”, set in the pre-mobile phone era of the 1990s, is the perfect introduction to an author who deserves far wider recognition. Never have we been more in need of things to lift the spirit, to block out reality for a few hours and help us indulge in mindless relaxation. It’s been a grim last 12 months! The rollercoaster months of lockdown and social distancing, the nightly catalogue on the news of deaths and new cases of covid infection, accompanied by the seemingly endless disputes over Brexit have us holding our head in our hands like Munch’s iconic painting of The Scream. Rupert degas name of the wind6/28/2023 Kvothe is retelling the story verbally to another, The Chronicler, a famous, travelling story-teller and scribe. However, what makes it work so well for this book is the spin on this idea that Rothfuss deploys. Some examples include Robin Hobb’s Farseer trilogy and Bernard Cornwell’s Warlord Chronicles series. Now, a protagonist recounting their own story in some form, such as a diary, is not a unique within fiction it has in fact been done many, many times before. The majority of the story is told in a recount style, with Kvothe himself narrating his own story. Specifically, his upbringing and how his legend starts in this book. The story follows the life of the legendary adventurer and wizard Kvothe. Especially, when combined with it’s sequel, which is equally long. A thick book, with 662 pages, each one filled to the brim with small sized writing this book will certainly keep you going for a while. It does not, at the time of writing, have a release date yet.Īs with most epic fantasy books, The Name of the Wind is a lengthy read. The final book in the series will be The Doors of Stone, which hasn’t been released yet. It is the first novel in the Kingkiller Chronicle series followed by The Wise Man’s Fear, a book which I will hopefully get around to reviewing soon. The Name of the Wind is a brilliantly epic fantasy novel by Patrick Rothfuss.

Treasure rebekah weatherspoon6/28/2023 And the most visible proponent of that transformation? The decidedly unstuffy and very sexy Professor Antigone Weston. What should have been the most sedate department on campus seems to be going through a volatile transformation. Arguments in the halls, threatening emails, and even a fistfight, for God’s sake. Sergeant Adriana Kent always pictured classical scholars as tweedy bookworms, but suddenly her campus police officers are being called to Denny on a near-daily basis. Tempers flare, and when the body of a prestigious alum turns up outside Denny Hall, Tig doubts she can bring her department through the crisis. Not everyone is willing to accept these changes, though. Tig Weston’s beloved classics department is evolving, expanding its course offerings to entice a new and more diverse generation of students.

The black swan nicholas taleb6/28/2023 Weight distribution plot (Credit: Boston University )Įxtremistan, on the other hand, is a very different realm. Is the death of the turkey a Black Swan event just because the turkey is used to look forward, on a linear way, expecting simplistic and repeatable patterns? Or is the world rather a way more complex place, plenty of butchers?Įxamples of Black Swan events are the invention of the computer, best selling books - such as Harry Potter -, the World War I, the Global Financial Crisis in 2008, and the COVID-19 pandemic. On the afternoon of the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, something unexpected will happen to the turkey. Every single feeding will firm up the bird's belief that it is the general rule of life to be fed every day by friendly members of the human race looking out for its best interests. The following example will give you a hint of Taleb’s intuition:Ĭonsider a turkey that is fed every day. They are retrospectively predictable, thus explainable only after they have already happened. They are extremely hard to predict with historical data, Taleb defines Black Swan events as a composition of three key fundamental factors: |
